Rasov

Typical Saxon farmer's town house

Bringing the wagon to town

Răşov (pronounced Reshov, ă = short e) is a much smaller town than Braşov and is located just up into the mountains. It was settled by farmers rather than merchants and the old Saxon houses reflect that. The gates open onto an interior courtyard where animals and farm equipment were kept. The farmers would go from the town to the fields outside of town each day. Today many farmers still use horsedrawn carts. Răşov has a fortress up on top of the hill (and a sign) but it is closed for repairs so we weren’t able to tour it.

We had rented a car to tour outside of Braşov. So on our way we went through Poiana Braşov, a beautiful ski resort. It is set in a meadow in the mountains above Braşov. The church is relatively new and is dedicated to Liviu Corneliu Babes, a martyr of the 1989 revolution.
