Castle on the Hill

The incline tram to the top of the hill in Buda

Parlaiment Building

St. Mathias Cathedral - note the roof

On our first day here we got our Budapest cards – a great thing for visitors! They give you days of riding the public transit (the ONLY way to go) and discounts at most of the sights. We were then ready to be real tourists. It is much warmer here than Braşov was, in the 70’s rather than the 40’s. Better for touristing.

We took the tram along the river – the Danube, which is brown right now instead of blue because of all the rain they have been having – to the Public Market. It is a fabulous 2 story brick building. The food market is on the first floor and basement: vegetables, butchers, chicken butchers, sausage shops, bakeries, fish mongers, game meat butchers, pickle stores and paprika shops. The upper floor is souvenir type vendors: leather bags, gloves & jackets; embroidered lace (machine made); peasant blouses (again, machine embroidered); souvenir plates, bowls, cups, glasses, napkins, calendars, pictures, ashtrays, etc.

Then off for another tram ride to the base of the incline tram to the top of Buda. Buda is one side of the river and Pest is the other. They got together a long time ago to make the city of Budapest. On top of the hill in Buda is the royal palace – it is now the National Gallery – and fantastic views of Pest and the river.
