Statue in the entrance to the baths - I'm hoping to replicate this when I re-do the upstairs bathroom

For our second day of touring we decided to ride the Millennium Line of the subway to City Park (Varosliget in Hungarian). This line was the first sub-surface railway in Europe and was build to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the Magyar’s conquest of Hungary. It is over 125 years old and the station interiors are lovely tile and beautiful woodwork.

Along the way we stopped to visit the Terror Museum. Now you might wonder why anyone would want to visit a Terror Museum and what might be there: well, it describes life under the Nazis and under the Soviets – both times of terror for the people of Hungary. We learned a lot and left feeling depressed so it was a good thing that our next stop was the City Park.

The park contains Vajdahunyad Castle, which isn’t really a castle - it is a collection of architecture from around Hungary – and SzĂ©chenyi Spa, a Turkish style bath in a beautiful Baroque building with wonderful tile. We laid around in the various baths for several hours until we were close to prunes. It was interesting to watch all the people. We determined that way too many men in Europe wear Speedo style bathing suits and that we prefer the baggy shorts style. There was a woman about my age there with wonderful purple and hot pink hair. I was so tempted but then Bug pointed out that I would have to start heavy duty tanning and get really long flashy nails and a bikini. We all decided it wasn’t worth it – but I did love the hair.

For dinner we went to our favorite Budapest restaurant, Lugas . Bear first found it on one of his mission trips. Then our landlady on our last visit here, in 2008, recommended it. It is still there and still wonderful. Bug had Chicken Kiev, Bear had Goulash soup and I had chicken wrapped in bacon and smothered in Gorgonzola sauce. Oh, yeah!
