A walk in the park(s)

Entrance to Mirogoj Cemetery

Thursday was park day. And not just any parks, but out of the way ones. First was Grobije Mirogoj. Here is a link to their website. http://www.gradskagroblja.hr/ Don’t forget to click on “English”. It is the Zagreb cemetery. Back in the 1700’s they decided that land in the city was to valuable to use on cemeteries so they built one big one outside of town and
moved everyone into it. Lots and lots of famous Croats are buried here. Many famous artists did the work on the tombstones. One of the most interesting parts was the graves for the German soldiers buried there during WWII. The plaque
talks about the “German victims” – how you turn soldiers into victims I am not sure. We had a yummy lunch of beer and pizza (4 somethings – mushrooms, green olives, pepperoni, salami, oysters, octopus (we think), shrimp and anchovies) at
a restaurant overlooking part of the market.

Then we were off for the 2nd park of the day: Maksimir Park. It is the largest park in Zabreg, was built in the late 1700’s and laid out in the “English fashion”. This means there are rustic paths (read that unpaved) through the trees with meadows interspersed. There are a bunch of lakes and the zoo is there. A very pleasant afternoon. We came home and I went to bed for an hour while Bear read his book out on the deck – the sun was out and it was warm and lovely. This evening we are back to rain.
